Retirement - State Retirement & Pension System

Disability retirement benefits may also apply should you have a significant medical event that no longer allows you to work in your job classification.  There are two types of disability retirement, ordinary and accidental disability.  To qualify for ordinary disability retirement, you must be permanently disabled and have at least 5 years of eligibility service.  Accidental disability benefits are paid you are permanently disabled as a direct result of a job-related injury.  Eligibility for accidental disability applies upon hire.  The monthly benefit for each type of disability is calculated differently.  Please refer to the Benefits Handbook for information regarding how the benefits are calculated.  
 
As a member of the SRPS, a death benefit is included.  If you die before retirement, but are still employed as a member, your designated beneficiary or estate will receive a lump sum payment equal to your contributions plus interested, as well as a lump sum equal to 100% of your salary if you had at least 1 year of service or if death is a result while performing job duties.  If you were eligible for a service retirement at the time of death, your spouse would have the option to select a monthly retirement benefit instead of the lump-sum payments described above.
