[00:00:00.49] [MUSIC - THE GOOD LAWDZ, "RUN IN THE

[00:00:03.12] NIGHT"]

[00:00:32.53] - Hello, my name's Annette Dickerson. I am the admin for the Office of Field Experience. And I'm here to help you with anything that you may need for this upcoming semester.

[00:01:02.85] - Hi, I'm Sara Elburn. I'm the Professional Development School's coordinator, which means that I manage our partnerships with our local schools so that you can be placed there. Good luck.

[00:01:23.22] - Hello, and I'm Paul Gasior. I'm the field experience coordinator at the Seidel School here at Salisbury University. All of you are experts at school. Been in school since you were four or five years old, and you probably think you know what teachers do, but you really don't. Unless you're a teacher's kid, in which case you have a really good, clear idea of what teachers do.

[00:01:44.70] What we want to do here at Salisbury University is get you involved in schools as quickly as possible. And so every time you take an education class, you will be placed in a school or program, so that you can actually watch with kids and see if this is really what you want to do for your career. I commend you for considering and pursuing education as a career. There's nothing more rewarding or interesting to do. This video will hopefully show you some of the things that we think you need to know here at Salisbury University. And also, we'll clarify the form that I would ask you to complete now.

[00:02:23.54] Well now that you know where we are, I want to share some information with you that will be important during your time here Salisbury University. First of all, PDS 101. PDS stands for Professional Development Schools. Maryland is unique in that all internships must be performed in a professional development school. We are fortunate to have 36 partner schools it is a very wide array of schools you can work in.

[00:02:48.29] Terminology wise, what is a teacher candidate? It's you. While you're in the foundations class like you are now, you're called a foundations teacher candidate. When you're admitted to the professional program in your junior year, you will be calling methods candidate.

[00:03:02.51] What is an intern? It's what used to be called a student teacher. The other interesting thing about Maryland is that there's is a 100 day extensive internship required of all teacher candidates. Now, that's a little difficult to do in one semester, in fact, impossible.

[00:03:18.29] So at SU, we spread it over two semesters. The first semester senior year-- your first semester of your senior year you will be going about 20 days. And then during your last semester here, you will be doing two eight week experiences, shooting for 100 days eventually. And you'll learn more about that as we go along.

[00:03:37.98] Now, where can you do that? I'm going to show you a map of our PDS schools so you can get acquainted. First of all, this is our PDS website. It's Salisbury.edu/PDS. You might want to mark this in your laptop or iPad or whatever, because I'll be asking you to go to this site regularly while you're here.

[00:03:58.58] If you click on the RPDS partner schools, here's a list of them. And you can see that they're in various counties across the eastern shore. And we have two PDS schools for elementary and early childhood interns in Anne Arundel County.

[00:04:12.93] If you click on Sammy, you get to see where they are. For just a quick minute for those of you that are not from Maryland, we are in Wicomico County, right here. South of us is Somerset County. Worcester County is from Pocomoke City up to Showell. Ocean City is in here.

[00:04:31.12] To our west is Dorchester County. We have four-- five partner schools there. If you're used to coming to the beach on Route 50, you go through Easton. That's Talbot County. And Easton Elementary School is a partner of ours.

[00:04:44.80] If instead you go across Rout 404 to the beach if you're from the western shore, you go through Denton. And that is in Caroline County. That is our PDS partner there.

[00:04:55.60] Queen Anne's county is on here, not because we have any PDS schools in here, but because the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center is located there on the campus of Chesapeake College. And we do offer the elementary education program there. And then across the bridge in Anne Arundel County, we have two professional development school partners in Odenton.

[00:05:16.96] Now, if you click on Wicomico-- because most of you will probably want to stay here for a while-- there's so many schools we've split it in two. And here is eastern Wicomico County. All you have to do is click on one of the schools. I'm going to pick Beaver Run, which is directly across Route 50 from the stadium. And then it tells you the same information for each school, the address, the phone number, how far it is from our campus, the approximate enrollment, what grade levels the school has, and it also shares their website if you want to go on it.

[00:05:49.80] A couple of years ago we asked our partners to sell themselves to you. So we asked them all to do a video. I just want to show you a short one here from Beaver Run. It was done several years ago.

[00:06:02.85] - Hi, I'm Annie, and I'm proud to call Beaver Run Elementary my school. We're easy to find here from the university. Just simply turn left off of 350 at Purdue Stadium, make a right, and you are here.

[00:06:17.11] Beaver Run has some really cool teachers and really awesome SU interns. The creative arts are integrated to keep me interested. One of the best things about my school is the extra activities. I enjoy doing reader's theater with my friends, and the positive behavior events, such as academic incentives and popcorn parties. As a dog lover, I enjoy reading to me furry friend who come in to me reading class each week. It is really exciting.

[00:06:53.63] Beaver Run Elementary has grades pre-k through second grade. We partner up with the Judy Center and East Salisbury Elementary. I hope you'll come over and enjoy the learning experience like I do.

[00:07:13.67] - That film was made by two of our interns several years ago. And that young lady-- Annie-- is now in high school. And I would like to share something about her that hopefully will give you pause to think about something.

[00:07:26.65] She is on the autism spectrum. She is very bright. She is obviously good at memorizing things. She did that whole speech.

[00:07:38.15] And I tell you that because people sometimes hear the term autism and think of children banging their heads against walls, or being incapable of communication. As you can see by Annie's example, that's not true. At Salisbury University and in all of our partner school districts, we firmly believe that all children can learn, and we need you to believe that too. Because that's what teachers do, that's what we're about, and that's what we want to achieve for our partners, and for the children in them.

[00:08:08.03] While we're at this site, I want to show you something else I'd like you to do today. If you go down here a little bit, it says Field Experience Tools. I'd like you to click on Candidate Tools-- which is you-- and then right here on the very top is the foundation school placement form. That's what I'd like you to click on and do today, if possible. I just want to walk you through it very quickly.

[00:08:30.02] Here it is. It's pretty short. You need your GullNet ID number, first and last names, SU email, please. Please remember, it's Gulls.Salisbury.edu. Also, this is not an auto correct form, so capitalize your first and last names, but please don't hit cap lock, because we have to fix all those.

[00:08:51.20] Your cell phone number, because it would be easier for me to ask you a question directly instead of going through your home phone number in Rockville or New Jersey. Your local address. Where are you living here? State too, zip, and then what major are you pursuing here at SU? Because it makes a difference.

[00:09:11.59] This number 11 is key for me. Have you ever had a fingerprint-based background check completed and passed through us, through SU, yes or no. The ones that have had them done, they probably won't have to have them done again. If you're not, I want to get the information to you as quickly as I can about what needs to be done.

[00:09:29.95] Did you transfer, yes or no. And then in here, choose your instructor. If you don't see the person listed-- and they're not all listed here-- just go to other, and then just give us the name. It's also important that you tell me what class you're taking, because that makes a difference in some ways. Some classes have different expectations.

[00:09:52.60] Just to give you an idea, in ECED 251, you're expected to get 16 hours this semester. In EDUC 210, it will be 20. In ELED 201, it'll be eight.

[00:10:06.19] ELED 202 is 20. And SCED 300 is 20 as well. If you're taking a couple of the courses-- for example, SCED 300 and EDUC 210 at the same time-- instead of going 40 hours, we'll just split the difference and ask you to go 30.

[00:10:26.02] What day do you tentatively want to go? You can see there are five school days broken into morning and afternoon. This is not absolute. It just gives me an idea of telling the school when you can come, so that they can give you the appropriate placement.

[00:10:40.90] If you are one of those ambitious souls who's going to get out of SU in 3 and 1/2 years, and you have a jam-packed schedule-- which many of you probably do-- and you just can't find a minimum of two hours in the school day to go to a classroom, you can pick after school hours here. And I'll explain that a little bit more a few minutes.

[00:11:01.54] What county do you want to go into? Remember, we are in Wicomico. And then down here, it says is there any special information that I need to know? For example, I am on the field hockey team and we practice every evening at 3:30. Or I can carpool-- I don't have a car, but I can carpool with my roommate, Joanne Freeman, something like that. I don't need to know everything about you, but just stuff that would affect your placement.

[00:11:29.26] And then there are three questions at the bottom. Essentially they are, have you ever been convicted of a crime? Have you ever had a problem with a Child Protective Service? And are you subject to any pending?

[00:11:42.88] If you've had a DUI, DWI, open container violation, underage drinking citation, possession of marijuana, it's not going to affect your ability to get into a school. So you're going to say yes to that, and then you're just going to briefly describe what it was. I was arrested for DUI in 2016, something like that. The same with something coming up, just tell me, yes or no. If your answers to no for all three there, then you just go on.

[00:12:16.44] If you have a yes answer to number 21, that's a problem. Frankly, if you've ever had a problem with a Child Protective Service, it's very doubtful I could get you into a school. And it's very doubtful you would ever be certified in this state. So if you click no, no, no, go down here and hit done. Remember, you must hit done, or I don't get it.

[00:12:40.36] And they want me to do all the form. I'm not going to do that. It's going to tell you the same thing. So if you can do that tonight, that'd be awesome. And I would really appreciate getting all the information I can so we can get you placed as quickly as possible.

[00:12:54.01] I want you to be careful about two things, closed doors, and your hands. You've heard all the nasty things that teachers have been accused of. You've read it in the paper. You've heard it online. You might have heard it in your schools.

[00:13:10.54] Unfortunately, it's an abuse of power that some people exercise, and it's just-- it's atrocious. But to safeguard yourself, don't let yourself be behind a closed door alone with a student. So if there's another adult present, that's entirely different.

[00:13:27.60] In addition, be careful where you touch children. If you are an early childhood or elementary education major, or a physical educator that's in an elementary setting, you're going to find that kids unconditionally love you. They're going to want to hug you.

[00:13:42.57] Well, of course, hug them back. Just be careful where your hands are. Up in the upper torso, pat them on the head, shake their hands, but be very, very careful.

[00:13:51.36] If you are going to be a secondary teacher and you're going to be in a middle school or a high school, then I will tell you, do not touch the kids. Be careful. Handshakes are great. Pat on the shoulder, fine.

[00:14:01.62] But just be very careful. Because unfortunately, in the atmosphere we live in now, if a kid says you did it, you did it until you can prove otherwise. And that will prevent you from going to the school, and it'll just be a big hassle. So just be careful. Don't be alone with a child, and be careful where you touch them.

[00:14:23.60] Some of you don't have cars, so then we give you-- show you two options here. One is called STARS/MAST. It's run by Wicomico County Public Schools, so it's local. It's a grant program that does after school programs for kids.

[00:14:40.91] Now, some of it is going to be disadvantaged children that really just need homework help. Some of it will be STEM related. They'll be some cool activities. Essentially, how it works is they come in, they usually get a snack, and then they go to work. And they absolutely love having Salisbury University college students come and work with them. They think it's special.

[00:15:05.06] Typically, you go one day a week. It's about two to three hours, so it's easily-- you can easily accumulate the hours you need. The other advantage is that the orientations-- which you have to attend, and they take about 20 to 30 minutes-- are going to be done on campus. And as I have those dates, I'll share them with you.

[00:15:22.50] The other advantage is you do not have to be fingerprinted for this program. They'll ask you to sign a volunteer form, but that's the end of it. Also, Wicomico County Public Library-- which is located exactly one mile down Camden Avenue in downtown Salisbury-- they also have an after school program.

[00:15:40.85] It's an excellent deal. It's very, very stimulated. A lot of computer work. They have a laptop-- excuse me, tablets, et cetera.

[00:15:49.32] It's a very good program. They would love to have you. And they also do it on Saturdays and Sundays.

[00:15:54.18] So if you're interested in that, just write that into that form where I showed you special things. I would like to go Wicomico County public library, and I will get you fixed up. You also do not need to be fingerprinted for that.

[00:16:06.31] Now, Junior Achievement is another excellent option for you. Especially for those of you that are taking ELED 201, which requires eight hours of experience a semester. This really gives you an easy way to that goal, because they give you 10 hours of credit for doing this.

[00:16:26.70] In addition to that, you're actually getting to teach. So what it is, they teach about different business literacy type things and financial literacy. It's done all over the eastern shore, so there's plenty of options on where to do it. You go five different times, and they're about 30 to 45 minute lessons.

[00:16:46.53] The neat thing about that is you're actually teaching. And you're actually going to be able to see the results of that. Did the kids understand what you were talking about the last time?

[00:16:56.46] If not, what are you going to do about it? How are you going to fix that? That's called assessment, and that's what teachers do. So that's an advantages program.

[00:17:03.93] And also, all the materials, all of the lesson plans, anything you need is given to you. It's a very good program. People that have done it really enjoyed it, because it gives you that feel of teaching. What is it like to stand up there and actually do that?

[00:17:22.59] All of our partner districts require fingerprint-based background checks. They can be done right here on the campus at SUPD, which is over next to the stadium. They require a reservation, and it's easy to do. If you are going to ask for a school placement, I will send you this information.

[00:17:40.85] I'm going to show you now in an email, but just so you'll know. You go to GullNet, on main menu, you pick off campus appointments. Reason for appointment, of course, you pick fingerprinting. And then you select the time you want to go.

[00:17:54.50] There's also an information sheet-- which is on our web site, and I will send to you again in an email-- that you need to print out and either send it to fingerprint services before your appointment, or bring it with you. It's basic information, social security number, your name, address, et cetera. They need to enter that information into the system, and if they have it ahead of time, that makes your time over there quick.

[00:18:20.46] They also do charge you for this. It's $58 to have this done. It will be billed to your Gull account. You don't have to bring a check or cash.

[00:18:30.98] Finally, I just want to remind you that this is really cool what you're doing. I admire the fact that you want to be teachers. And remember, it's all about the kids.

[00:18:40.86] You're going to have a wonderful time here at Salisbury University. Our professors do a great job preparing you for teaching. And we're blessed to have many, many great mentor teachers and schools to place you in. I again commend you, and I wish you all the best in your coming career.
